DISCLAIMER: Written by Kyle McCall Wilson (Bold as Bard Company Member)
On the 13th and 14th December, Bold as Bard will present a very special adaptation of Shakespeares’ Richard The Third. Bold as Bard have chosen to be very bold in choosing what to call this Show… ‘Richard The Spaz’ we are sure that this name may cause some negative reactions from our audience.
However The Title of Richard the Spaz was chosen not to shock or garner extra attention but to draw attention to the way Shakespeare perhaps over embellished Richard the Thirds physical disabilities. During the time of the original piece disability was very much associated with being evil and Shakespeare wanted to make Queen Elizabeth and Tudors look great and Richard not so much.
Richard The Spaz as a title was suggested by the actor who plays Richard III, Lee Bettles who has cerebral palsy and who has developed a thick skin and a dark sense of humour towards his disability. As a cast comprised of performers with various disabilities we feel we have the right to use whatever language has been used against us, to dehumanise and minimize us, in a way that will highlight our hard work talent and dedication as a cast while making a statement about how disability has and is still used in entertainment as a symbol for wrongness or evil.
